Oh my goodness what a disaster!
Well, having kitted out my Cobra MkIII with a detailed surface scanner and awesome D-Scanner I set off into uncharted space (or so I thought)
I zoomed through populated space checking each system for the new Tag indicating who first discovered the star or planet and wasn't surprised to see every body I discovered has been found by someone else first (they included all the beta-testing discoveries too I believe).
Not too disheartened yet I also assumed that since people need to dock & sell data to be tagged as the first to discover an object once I got away from populated space things would get easier.
So I stopped scanning populated space & headed straight towards the galactic centre (beginning to realise as I looked at my paltry progress on the galactic map that my Cobra's jump range of not quite 10LY was really slowing progress. I had heard that ASPs and perhaps even Lakon 6s could get up to 40LY.
Anyway I was sure that I'd find a few un-charted objects in un-populated space but as I headed further in I became increasingly frustrated as every single object (let alone stars) had been tagged by someone before me.
I varied my flight path but to no avail.
I stopped scanning the "Undiscovered" systems and just checked if they were tagged (which they were) and moved on.
(N.B. un-discovered doesn't actually mean that!!! I guess it means not often discovered!).
This was just an attempt to get further faster but it didn't seem to help. Eventually, after hundreds of light years and 400 odd systems visited I started heading back to populated space and give it up as a bad job - perhaps to try again with a ship with further range.
I located my nearest station (an independent one) and eventually reached it with a fair chunk of data if no new discoveries to keep my name immortalised.
I arrived in the destination system and was at least greeted by a pirate (joy) time to vent my frustration on an unsuspecting NPC.
Oh dear. My hubris was my downfall!
Because we were both too close to the sun I took some serious heat damage and down to about 50% ship health decided that although they were less I'd better bug out to avoid losing the data - and those suns can get pretty toasty pretty fast. I quickly stowed my hard points and started jumping just at that point the Pirate scum blew my canopy out and my Oxygen started depleting - 4 mins left - yikes. I managed to jump and got to the station with 40 secs remaining, I landed on the pad with 4 secs remaining...and before I'd full docked......BLEW UP!
I then coughed up CR280K in excess to get my Cobra back so many light years hard earned away from the area around Lave which I had headed back towards.
My Wanderlust Epic had turned into an EPIC FAIL!!!
I'm afraid it was all so frustrating I didn't get any screenshots so here is one from today when I've been taking out my frustration by toasting Pirates near the Nijotec system (I saw things were happening on GalNet news & went there to help the Federation in an attempt to re-build my increasingly unfriendly rep with the Feds...that didn't go well either but I'll document that another time). You may note "Surge Detected" but they didn't escape. I had toasted so many pirates in this sortie that I'd run out of Ammo for my Multi-Cannons!! Had to rely on my Cat D Beams Lasers :o)
